About the Jeevika Fellowship

CCS is offering the Jeevika Fellowship to law students from April 2022 to March 2023 to provide legal aid and spread awareness on the rights of street vendors in Delhi. We seek to engage 10-15 law students, across colleges, passionate about assisting street vendors in Delhi. Our team will train all fellows on filing complaints, collecting grievance data, and spreading awareness on the legal rights of street vendors.

Background

Samjad—a fruit-vendor in the Yusuf Sarai market—was arbitrarily penalised INR 2000-3000 for accumulation of rubbish and causing nuisance under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. But the penalty under this Act is only INR 50. Centre for Civil Society (CCS) helped him to contest the fine before the Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ), Saket Court. ASJ observed that the penalty cannot exceed INR 50 and remanded the case to the Municipal Magistrate who quashed the penalty.
