About the Opportunity:

The Ford Foundation seeks a dynamic and collaborative Program Officer (PO) to join the BUILD and Philanthropy team.

The role will have three components:

  • (1) Programming the Philanthropy portfolio, implementing and refining its existing strategy to build  an enduring capacity to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) with an intersectional lens in U.S. philanthropy and serving as an internal and external advisor and thought leader on effective and equitable philanthropic practice;
  • (2) Supporting Ford Foundation programs and BUILD grantee partners on the organizational development aspects of BUILD grants;  and
  • (3) Co-leading the BUILD initiative’s philanthropic-engagement strategy in the US and Global South.

The Program Officer may also manage other grants or lead special projects related to the BUILD team’s broader impact goals, such as Cohorts, Convenings, and Technical Assistance (CCTA) and evaluation. 

Roles and Responsibilities

  • The Program Officer will steward the existing Philanthropy grant-making strategy to ensure a more equitable philanthropic sector, while also advancing the work of the broader BUILD program.
  • Officer will be expected to collaborate internally with BUILD program officers and others throughout the Foundation, as well as externally, to provide intellectual leadership and guidance for grantee partners on institutional strengthening as well as effective and equitable funding.
  • The Program Officer will spend approximately 65% of their time on the Philanthropy portfolio, and about 35% on the work of the BUILD team, although these percentages may fluctuate over time. 
  • The Program Officer will join a 10-person BUILD team, comprised of highly collaborative professionals. The team supports Foundation staff, grantee partners, and each other with a commitment to excellence and equity. Members strive to create a team culture of inclusion, shared power, and mutual respect and caring, with a healthy dose of joy and fun.  
  • This position will report to the BUILD Director.
  • This position is a hybrid role based in New York, with in-person presence required three days each week.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS or equivalent work experience plus at least 8 years of experience in the philanthropy or nonprofit sectors, whether as a grantmaker, senior staff of a sector-infrastructure organization, or senior staff of a capacity-building intermediary or consultancy.
  • Understanding of the U.S. civil society sector, including the role of philanthropy relative to nonprofits, government and business; the different types of foundations and donors; and the history of past efforts to reform philanthropy.
  • Familiarity and experience with organizational and network development concepts, frameworks, and tools, and willingness to adapt capacity building approaches to each unique grantee partner; not wedded to any single model or approach. 
  • Strategic thinker with an understanding of the various mechanisms and venues through which philanthropy and our grant partners can effect change (e.g., external pressure, internal advocacy, research, collaboration, networks; etc).
  • Proven track record of working closely with communities that have been historically marginalized in systems that affect their lives.

Salary:

  • The minimum salary for this position is $160,000 and the maximum is $180,000.
