Applications are invited from eligible candidates for the British Council Future News Worldwide Program 2022.
About British Council Future News Worldwide Program
Future News Worldwide is a partnership programme between the British Council and some of the world’s leading media organisations; BBC, Google, Reuters, The Herald, The Quint and the UK schools of journalism. Together we identify, train and connect the next generation of global journalists.
The Future News Worldwide annual summit is a central focus of the programme, and brings together 100 young journalists each July to learn from broadcasters, editors and reporters and meet their peers around the globe. Following the conference delegates join the FNW alumni network. In 2022 the summit will be held virtually.
Delegates for the summit are selected through a global competition, running 16 May – 12 June.
Eligibility
The Competition is open to individuals of any nationality who meet all the criteria below:
- Aged 18-25 on 1 July 2020
- A registered undergraduate or postgraduate student (of any subject), enrolled at a university or higher education institution OR a recent graduate who completed their course after 1 July 2018
- A native speaker of English OR be able to speak English at IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent
- Not have participated in a previous iteration of Future NEWS or Future News Worldwide
- Dedicated to a career in journalism, in any form
- Available to travel to and from the UK on any date between 11 – 16 July 2020
Only one entry per person is allowed.
Entry to the Competition is free of charge although participants are responsible for their own costs of connecting to the Internet.
The Competition is not open to British Council employees or contractors (or members of their immediate families) or anyone else professionally associated with the Competition. We reserve the right not to award the prize or to select an alternative winner if we are aware or have reasonable grounds to believe that the winner is not eligible.
Prizes
The prize consists of a place at the Future News Worldwide 2020 conference, and inclusion in the Future News Worldwide alumni network.
This includes the following:
- Return travel from local airport to London for the dates of the Conference
- The application fee of one Standard Service visa application (if required)
- Accommodation
- Catering on the following basis:
- 13 July – dinner
- 14 and 15 July – all meals
- 16 July – breakfast only
Winners are responsible for all other costs, including travel to local airport and visa centres, visa application postage and photocopying if applicable.
Where practicable delegates will be expected to arrive in London on 12 July and depart on 16 July. This allows time for tourism, jetlag recovery and travel delays. Any delegate who wishes to travel on alternative dates may arrange their own single or return travel; this will be at their own cost and will not be reimbursed by the British Council.
UK-based delegates may choose to arrive into London on 12 or 13 July.
