About Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship:

The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (ISP) was established by His Highness the Aga Khan to provide crucial support to talented students from developing countries who lack the means to finance their postgraduate studies. This scholarship enables recipients to study at esteemed higher education institutions of their choice.

Selection Criteria:

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Outstanding academic records.
  • Demonstrated financial need. While financial assistance is provided based on students’ needs, the ISP should be considered a last resort. Applicants must show that they have explored and secured multiple sources of funding.
  • Admission to a reputable postgraduate institution of higher learning. While Master’s degree courses are given priority, applications for Ph.D. studies are also considered. Local/regional universities and distance learning programmes are acceptable for ISP funding if they maintain course quality.
  • Strong professional experience, extracurricular achievements, volunteer contributions, and leadership skills.

Application Process:

  • Award recipients are selected through an annual competitive application process. Interested individuals must liaise with the appropriate country-based unit, which processes applications and conducts interviews.
  • The ISP is considered a lender of last resort, so preference is given to those who have secured funding from alternative sources.

Application Timelines:

  • The application cycle for 2024-2025 will open in January 2024.
  • Applicants should contact their local Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) offices for application forms, deadline dates, and application requirements.

Award Conditions:

  • ISP awards consist of a 50% grant and 50% loan (applicants must repay 50% of the award amount). Master’s scholarships cover the entire degree course duration, while Ph.D. students receive scholarships for the first two years, after which they are expected to secure alternative funding.
  • A cumulative service charge of five percent per annum applies to the loan amount, and a guarantor is required.
  • The repayment period is five years, starting six months after graduation or withdrawal of support. Graduates returning to work in a developing country are eligible for a two-year moratorium.
  • The award covers tuition fees and living expenses for the student but does not include family members’ living expenses or international travel costs.
