The Young Professionals Programme
The Young Professionals Programme (YPP) is a recruitment initiative for talented, highly qualified professionals to start a career as an international civil servant with the United Nations Secretariat. It consists of an entrance examination and professional development programmes once successful candidates start their career with the UN.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a national of a participating country;
- Education: Hold at least a first-level university degree relevant for the exam(at least a relevant Bachelor’s degree or a 3-year equivalent degree)
- Be 32 years old or younger in the year of the exam; and
- Must be fluent in English or French.

Remuneration
- You will receive a salary which is paid on the basis of a worldwide scale and benefits which take account of your dependants and the cost of living at your duty station.
- Salary Range: 37,000 USD – 80,000 USD + Cost of Living for entry level professionals

- Rental subsidy if newly arrived at the duty station your rent represents too high proportion of the total remuneration.
- Dependency allowances if you have an eligible dependent spouse and/or child(ren).
- Under certain conditions an education grant if you have eligible children in school.
- Travel and shipping expenses when you are moving from one duty station to another.
- Assignment grant to assist you in meeting initial extraordinary costs when arriving at or relocating to a new duty station.
- At some duty stations, a hardship allowance linked to living and working conditions is paid and where there are restrictions on bringing family members, a non-family hardship allowance is also paid.
- Hazard pay and rest and recuperation break when you serve in locations where the conditions are particularly hazardous, stressful and difficult.
Application Process
- Confirm Your Eligibility: Carefully review basic application criteria on the YPP Home page.
- Review The Job Opening: The YPP application period typically opens each June.The job openings, specific to each exam area, will be found through Inspira or the UN Careers Portal. Read carefully to determine if you meet the requirements.
- Prepare An Application: Watch the YPP Application Guide Video prior to applying! A general UN “Applicant Guide” is available in Inspira by logging in and clicking on the “Manuals” link on the top of the page.
- Application Evaluation :
- Applications will be screened to determine if they meet the basic eligibility requirements (i.e., nationality, age, education, language).
- If more than 40 applicants from the same country are eligible for an exam area, those applicants will be screened and ranked based on highest level of education completed, knowledge of official UN languages, and relevant work experience.
- If the exam occurs in two stages, then 60 applicants per country/per exam area may be invited to the first exam stage, with a maximum of 40 per country/per exam area proceeding to the second stage.
- All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
Examination Structure
- The examination process consists of a written and an oral stage.
- The written examination is administered online and may be conducted in either one or two stages.
- Prior to finalizing the results of the written examination, candidates may be subject to further verification via a brief, online, proctored assessment.
- The written examination consists of a General Paper and a Specialized Paper:
- Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited to take part in the oral examination, which is a competency-based video-conference interview with a panel of members of the Specialized Examination Board.
- At the end of the evaluation process, all candidates will be individually informed of their results.
