About the Challenge
Azim Premji University has been organizing the ‘Stories of Change’ – Case Study Challenge, on documenting good practices of social change from NGOs, government programmes, Social Enterprises and other organizations directly involved in design and implementation of development interventions.
This year, India, as well as most parts of the world, has witnessed an unprecedented pandemic, Covid-19, killing over a million people, crippling the health system, the economy, employment and livelihoods, education and other vital aspects of public life.
While it exposed several weaknesses of the policy and institutional regimes of the country as regards healthcare, migration, welfare and livelihoods, small and medium businesses, etc. the last six months also witnessed the display of incredible collective action of larger citizenry in areas of humanitarian response, healthcare, livelihoods, entitlements, including influencing policy around these issues.
Most significantly, citizen action has not been confined to existing organised civil society organisations (CSOs), but included formation of new informal and formal citizen groups shouldering massive responsibilities towards their fellow citizens. Such responses are found in scale and depth across the country.
Sub Themes
It will be organized around the following sub-themes, relating to the response to widespread critical needs. These are
- Humanitarian response to specific communities in rural, urban and forest areas
- Healthcare responses specific to Covid-19
- Livelihoods response to specific communities
- Welfare and entitlement responses e.g. MGNREGA, PDS, Pension, DBTs and many others
- New initiatives cutting across these above themes and more including matters related to policies
