Background on Study:
The unsafe disposal of child feces into backyard area of households or in ponds and other bodies of water causes fecal contamination of the environment and may lead to diarrhea and other illnesses. As such, Emory University is working with the NGO Gram Vikas to evaluate a behavior change intervention aimed at improving child feces management practices (i.e. promoting the disposal of child feces into the household latrine and teaching children to learn how to use the latrine).
The study includes 74 villages across Ganjam and Gajapati districts. An enumerator team will carry-out a survey across all 74 villages from July to September 2021. The enumerator team will be trained in advance on the survey questions and how to use the Open Data Kit (ODK) application on an Android phone to record survey responses from participants.
Location of Work:
- Enumerator team will be expected to reside in rented apartments on Gram Vikas ‘Mohuda’ campus, Berhampur, Odisha
- Enumerator team may also be expected to reside in rented apartments on other Gram Vikas campuses, or in rented hotel rooms, in Ganjam and Gajapati districts for short periods of time (about 1 week) when conducting data collection in particular areas
- Enumerators will conduct survey data collection in 74 villages throughout Ganjam and Gajapati districts

Required Skills:
- Minimum requirement of a Bachelors degree
- Odia language skills (verbal and reading)
- Know how to use an Android phone
- Strong conversational skills (able to speak with strangers easily)
- Attention to detail
- Work well in a team and sincere in your work
- Previous experience administering surveys preferred
Required Commitment:
- Must be willing to reside on Gram Vikas campus located in Berhampur, and potentially other Gram Vikas campuses or a hotel for shorter periods of time (no housing cost – Emory will cover all rent/hotel fees)
- Must be willing to work 5 days a week with 2 break days a week.
- Must be willing to travel long distances with the team to rural villages across Ganjam and Gajapati districts (transportation provided)
- Must be willing to work long days from early in the morning to early evening, as some villages are quite far (additional break days will be provided as needed in these cases.
- Enumerator will meet with Research Manager and other enumerator team members in the morning at the office and gather materials (each enumerator will be assigned their own Android phone)
- Travel to selected village in Ganjam or Gajapti district
- Conduct 4 to 5 interviews at assigned households. Interviews to take approximately 1 hour. Break provided for lunch.
- Travel back to office, get paperwork checked and approved by Research Manager, send surveys to online server.
Daily Work:
- Supervision: The enumerator will directly report to the Research Manager. The enumerator should also comply with any other instructions provided by Emory staff. Before leaving the work site for the day, s/he should ask permission from the Research Manager.
- Transportation: Transportation will be provided from Mohuda campus to the trial villages in Ganjam and Gajapati districts. Enumerators will be expected to walk to their assigned households after reaching the village. In some cases, enumerators may have to walk some distance to the village if there is no direct road.
- Ethical Considerations and Expectations: The enumerator will be trained on research ethics, and should comply with these ethical considerations in order to ensure participants’ rights, privacy, and confidentiality. The enumerator should not comment or discuss any information provided by or observed at households outside of designated times and locations, as specified by Emory staff.
- COVID-19 Safety: The safety of our team members is very important to us. We will provide proper training on how to conduct these surveys safely and will have several safety protocols in place (such as taking the survey outside, keeping distance, use of hand sanitizer, etc.).
Salary and Benefits:
- The Enumerator will receive the following gross monthly salary of 18,000Rs.
- Housing and transportation will be provided.
- Certificate will be provided.
