About Nandankanan Biological Park

Spread over 170 acres, Nandankanan Biological Park is a zoo and botanical garden in Odisha, India.

The Biological Park is home to more than 1600 individual animals from 166 species. Meaning ‘the Garden of Heaven’, the Park was established in 1960 and opened to the public in 1979. Nandankanan is the first zoo in the world to breed White tigers and Melanistic tigers.

About the Opportunity

Internship programme at Nandankanan Biological Park, Odisha initiated to provide a learning opportunity for graduate/ post-graduate students of recognized college/university of India and Abroad.

The interns will be actively involved in the field of zoo management and learn new skills of ex-situ and in-situ conservation techniques at Nandankanan. It also provides a platform to start basic research and carryout project/dissertation in their course curriculum to help in career development and higher studies.

No. of Interns

  • Maximum 10 interns will be selected for each session.

Eligibility

  • Students pursuing Graduation (Bachelors) or Post graduation (Master’s degree) course from any recognized Institutions/Universities of India and Abroad.
  • The students who have completed Graduate degree from any recognized institution/ university also are eligible for applying.

Duration of Internship

  • Nandankanan internships positions opens throughout the year.
  • Internship programme is for a period of minimum 30 days to a maximum of 3 months.
  • Candidate can apply for one of the four sessions:
    • Summer (April-June),
    • Fall (July-September),
    • Spring (October-December),
    • Winter (January-March)
  • For work beyond 3 months one has to apply again for extension of permission.

  1. Behavioural study of zoo animals.
  2. Economic valuation of Ecosystem Services of Nandankanan Zoological Park.
  3. Visitor survey and evaluation of change in conservation attitude through zoo awareness programs.
  4. Non-invasive sampling of Ecto-endo parasite and their surveillance.
  5. Water quality parameter of wetlands of Nandankanan.
  6. Non-invasive assessment of Biodiversity (Floral and Faunal) inside Nandankanan Wildlife Sanctuary.
  7. Non-invasive behavioural enrichment of zoo animals.
  8. Study on green good deeds.
  9. Study on solid and liquid waste management.
  10. Any other relevant to Nandankanan

Selection Process

  • Applications will be scrutinized by the Selection Committee on merit basis.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be called for document verification and counselling.

Stipend

  • No stipend will be paid by Nandankanan for the said internship programme.

Experience Certificate

  • Certificate will be issued to interns on satisfactory completion of their internship assignment and submission of internship report.
  • Interns not completing the requisite period will not be issued any certificate.
  • Nandankanan shall not grant any academic credits for an internship.

Logistics, Support and other Modalities

  • The intern will be issued a intern card for the duration of Internship only.
  • Intern will be taken through respective section brief overview within a week of joining the internship.
  • Each intern will be assigned to a zoo official for the period of internship to report and guidance.
  • An intern should not to visit any sensitive (Protected and Restricted) area for work without proper permission.
  • Nandankanan will not provide any accommodation for the interns during the internship.
  • However, interns will be provided with other required logistic support based on availability.

  • Duration of the internship (Start and end date) should be clearly indicated.
