Applications are invited for IIT Kanpur SURGE Summer Internship Program 2022. The last date of application is 4 February.
About SURGE 2022
Under the Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) program, students from IITK and other participating institutions undertake short duration, but focused research projects and push their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by the classroom. The duration of the program is approximately 8 weeks.
The SURGE-2022 Program is tentatively scheduled to be held from 13th May 2022 till 14th July 2022. An award plus a commendation certificate is given to those SURGE students who produce exceptional quality research during the period.
After four weeks, the SURGE participants are required to give a mid-term presentation to a review committee consisting of a group of academic staff members of IIT Kanpur. The review committee gives feedback and suggests possible improvements in the work.
Eligibility
SURGE for Other Countries
The SURGE program has been opened to UG students from NEPAL and BHUTAN initially. A maximum of 04 students from NEPAL + BHUTAN may be allowed to participate in the SURGE program for the upcoming summer of 2022. SURGE Program will also be made open to students from other selected countries on limited sponsorship.

The eligibility criteria for students at the time of starting of internship from other countries to apply for summer internship at IIT Kanpur are mentioned below:
- B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
- Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
- B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
SURGE for Non-IITK Indian Students:
Under this program, Non-IITK students will be eligible to apply for summer project at IIT Kanpur. This year SURGE is open for all colleges. The eligibility criteria for Non-IITK students at the time of starting of internship are mentioned below:
- B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
- Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
- B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
- M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)
SURGE for IITK at IIT Kanpur:
In this program, IITK students are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. In order to complete the application, it is necessary for the student to identify a professor who agrees to be his/her mentor during the summer period, and a suitable project to pursue for the 08 weeks in summer. The eligibility criteria for IITK students at the time of starting of internship are:
- B.Tech/BS (2nd,3rd year completed),
- Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd, 4th year),
- M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year)
Funding
- Funding from SURGE (Institute Funded): Participants selected under this category will receive a stipend of Rs 12,500/- during the program duration.
- Funding from IITK Project (Project Funded): Participants selected under this category will have an opportunity to work on projects which will be funded by faculty members of IIT Kanpur.
- Self Funded: Participants selected under this category will have an opportunity to work on projects of faculty members of IIT Kanpur, however, they will not be entittled for any funding.
- Industry-IITK tie-up, if any: Participants selected under this category will have an opportunity to work as individuals or in teams, on real-world projects proposed by the industry with mentors from both IIT Kanpur and the industry. The stipend will be paid by the industry. In SURGE-2022, only IIT Kanpur students can participate under this category.
