About the Organisation
Indian Housing Federation (IHF) is a Section 8 non-profit organisation with a vision to reduce inequalities faced by socially and economically weaker sections of the society by enabling access to affordable and sustainable housing. Incorporated in July 2015, IHF has accumulated over six years of grassroots experience and understanding of the complex and diverse space of housing in India, while providing strategic and implementation support to the state governments of Assam, Haryana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh towards achieving the objective of “Housing for All”.

About UnATHI Fellowship
UnATHI Fellowship is a unique opportunity for young professionals who are interested in the subject of low-income housing and housing policy to get a handson and an immersive experience of working in this sector. The fellows would be placed at the State Government department/institution responsible for housing and work on a pilot/prototype project as a response to a problem statement that the State Government is focussing on in order to deliver on its mandate of ‘Housing for All’.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support the State Government in the implementation of National level, State level and local housing schemes and initiatives.
- Implement a pilot project/prototype based on the scoping of the State Government needs to demonstrate innovative models of housing delivery and implementation.
- Developing a hyper-local understanding of the housing sector/landscape in your State via secondary and primary research, policy analysis, stakeholder (both government and non-government) mapping etc.
- Build a thorough understanding of the needs of the various stakeholders in the low-income housing sector in the State and provide liaising support to foster the partnerships and collaborations among them to further the agenda of Housing for All.
- Build capacities of the government system and local organisations through trainings, workshops and implementation support.
- Contribute to IHF’s knowledge repository by documenting case-studies, learnings, experiences, best practices and any other relevant insights from your field work.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of IHF interventions regularly.
- Support the projects of partner organizations as and when required and feasible
Eligibility
- A keen interest in social development, low-income housing and a drive to contribute meaningfully to this sector.
- 0 to 2 years of work experience, in government facing roles or established non-profits (preferable but not mandatory).
- A Masters degree in Public Policy/Urban Planning/Architecture/Social Development/ Finance/ Business Management/Civil Engineering/ Liberal Arts or equivalent.
- Proficiency (speaking, writing and reading) in languages mentioned above in the table.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and networking skills required for effective liaising between stakeholders.
- Willing and flexible to travel intra and inter State for work.
Tenure
- The fellowship will be a full-time engagement for the duration of typically 1 year. However for this position it is effectively a 16 month fellowship as the candidate is joining in advance.
Posting
- The fellows will be assured an immersive experience as they shall be posted in the State Government department/institution responsible for housing. While the specifics shall vary from state to state, the larger idea is to work closely with the government and influence the change from within the system.
Perks and Remuneration
- INR 30,000 to INR 35,000 per month – As per development sector norms based on prior experience and qualifications of the candidate
- The fellows will have access to the IHF Stakeholder Network which they can access and leverage during the fellowship for meeting their deliverables
- Capacity Building:The fellow shall be given numerous opportunities to learn and grow via both, theory and practice. There will also be a unique cross-learning opportunity from within the cohort of fellows who are all placed across the country in different states and in different contexts.
- Post the fellowship, the fellows shall pass on the baton to the next cohort and step into the sector with a holistic and nuanced understanding of the low-income housing space. IHF’s goal with the UnATHI Fellowship is to contribute to the sector by adding to it a workforce that has the right skills, is sufficiently sensitised and is grounded in reality!
