About Aweksha

Aweksha which means ‘CARE’ is a Bangalore-based women’s trust working towards ending all forms of gender based violence and discrimination. Although, Aweksha in itself is a new entity, we come with about 42 years of experience of working on the ground providing moral, legal, psychological, social and emotional support to women who are survivors of abuse and violence.

About the Project

Our work at Victoria Hospital started in 1997 with our study on the unnatural deaths of women. The results of this study led us to make investigations into the unnatural deaths of women and the study concluded that a total of about 100 women were dying unnaturally every month in the city of Bangalore. Out of this figure about 75% of the women were dying due to burning in sudden and suspicious circumstances. As a part of this study, we began engaging with the parents of the woman who had lost their lives and this is when we visited the burns ward of Victoria Hospital to find it in a condition which needed several changes.

Our continued intervention from 1997 in the form of lobbying and advocacy meetings has led to a complete reconstruction and revamp of the burns ward of the Victoria Hospital.

The aim of our intervention at the KR Hospital is to replicate the Victoria Model in order to understand burn injuries in a holistic way.
